Cop Shot Colleague ‘Instinctively” During Mock Drill
An inquest into the killing of a police officer heard that the cop who shot at PC Ian terry during a police training exercise two years ago had acted out of instinct than any other motive.
In June 2008, PC Terry was killed when a colleague fired a CS gas round at him from a distance of 30cm. The incident took place when police were engaged in a practice drill in the premises of a deserted Sharp’s factory in Newton Heath,
Everyone had been ordered to keep their weapons facing downwards and Terry was to be stopped only by firing at the front tyres of his car, which would incapacitate the vehicle.
The inquest was told that all officers started closing in on Terry’s vehicle as per the plan. Terry pretended to defend himself by pointing an unloaded pistol at the officers surrounding his vehicle. This was when this officer shot Terry with one shot of Round Irritant Personnel ammunition from point blank range.

The officer, whose name has been kept anonymous, told the investigation team for the Independent Police Complaints Commission that he had responded instinctively to the situation and had no intent of killing Ian Terry.
